Interactive Multi Touch Systems

The future of computing

Project update: MTWall

Ok. Here is a picture of my first test. No projector image, just a IR + acrylic sheet test to confirm that it works.

This is with light touch of the surface. Will be even better with tefflon spray applyed. That will also make it a lot nicer at touch and drag. (So says my sources where I’ve learned this.)
Next step is to test with a projector image and try to calibrate the image.

Project update

Well, I have been busy with the wall lately, and made some mistakes. But none that big that it spoils the project.
I have been working on getting light in the acrylic sheet, and are it works a better then i expected. The mistake was that I used spray glue on the sheet to get the diffuser where it was suppose to be. But the glue broke the total frustrated internal reflection. So the light escaped the sheet before it could reflect my touch points. So, I needed to clean up that mess, and its not one step back to figure out how I can get the diffuser to stay where it suppose to be.

I will soon post some more pictures of the wall. So, stay tuned!

Showcase

I just received a link from my friend Sharath Patali, and thought that this is a must watch thing.

This can also clear up some of your thoughts about what mutli touch systems can be used for.
Take a look at this video:

Future Multitouch Meeting Room from Oli Mival on Vimeo.

This is a quick look at the Interactive Collaborative Environment I’ve built at Edinburgh Napier University.

A little detail…
It has multiple touch enabled surfaces including four 42″ HD dual touch screens, one 46″ HD multitouch screen and a 108″ multitouch table. The software is a mix of Windows 7, OS X and Linux but the table runs PyMT. The walls are digitally augmented whiteboards which capture anything written anywhere. This is a functioning meeting room as well as a research platform for novel UI and UX. The room will officially open it’s door in Jan 2010.

If this isn’t cool, I don’t know what is!
Most of the apps they are using here, is made using python and the PyMT Framework. :)

Project: Interactive Multi Touch Media Center

Yeah, i’m about to make myself a multi touch media center wall. It’s not as big as it may sound. But the biggest for now.

The wall is going to be a light wall with a “window”. This window is going to be the surface. Its going to be 105×86cm and with the following layers:

  • 8mm acrylic sheet with IR strips from http://www.environmentallights.com/
  • 1 layer of unrippable drawing paper from a local architecture company as a diffuser.
  • One layer of dual layer green glass. No, its not green to the naked eye if you look through it, only from the edges.

This is only the surface. And its going to be a nice setup.
Its a rear projecting type setup where the projector is places behind the surface, and points to a mirror to shorten the range needed to get the size of the projected image.

I will take pictures and add as I progress. Or when i’m done, depends on if i get time to publish the progress and things like that.

I will have a Multi Touch Media Center application running on one computer. And by connecting it to my server, I will have access to all the pictures i got there, and the home made movies and stuff like that. The application will also contain some simple games for the kids to play with, and some other goodies. I might add Multi Touch Media Center for you ppl to download and use. But only if I think its worth sharing.
